We had one of those pest control people come to the door and I told them I really diddn't want them to spray, we have about 30,000 bees in our backyard. He said he kill all of them for me....I explained that they were our pets, not pests:)
Yes, she is holding a honeybee...I told you they are docile. This is what we try to tell people and they give us "that look" like we are crazy. Honeybees are workers-they don't have time to go around attacking people. They wake up and go to work and come back at the end of the day. If you step on them, or grab one...they will sting you just like most animals would if you tried to hurt them. So we are gentle with them. The kids see a wasp, hornet, they scream and squish it...they see their honeybee wandering they go "oh poor girl, and take her back to the hive:) "
Rob goes out every week to check their progress and doesn't wear gloves a lot of the time and they just walk on his hands, as he is messing around in their home. I will add here that although I don't mind the bees I have not yet reached the level of letting them crawl all over me:)
This is the wall we put next to the hive for a couple of reasons. It blocks the wind, and it keeps the bees in line so there flight pattern is straight up and not over to my garden so much. My garden is 6 inches on the other side of the fence and I am out there with 30,000 bees every day watering and weeding and they don't bother me. They love to pollinate in the flowers but like I said they do their business and move on.
