Bringing the Bees home

Before you get the bees, you obviously have to have everything ready. You also need to now what you are going to do once they get here:) You order your bees a few months in advance and you pickup a nice box of about 15,000 honeybees. We ordered Italian bees because of their docile temperment. I had the "privilege" of hauling 4 little kids to pick them up while Rob was at work..

Once home we kept them in the garage until Rob got home. He had the hive ready to go and dumped them in the hive box like he had read. This wasn't our best moment:) Bees trapped in a box and dumped into a hive....hmmmm... I was the camera lady and the kids were playing in the backyard pretty excited. The bees got dumped and disoriented and things were a little different than Rob expected so it was a little hectic.

I did learn that disoriented bees and thick hair can be a bad combo..If you have ever seen a grown woman hit her head repeatedly with a lid then you can imagine how funny this event was...It really was funny and the kids and me were laughing as I am doing it....the bee lost BTW.  Rob got one sting on his cheek because his veil had a gap...if you plan on being a beekeeper you will probably get stung a few times. If you have a cat you will probably get scratched...it comes with the territory.  You take some benadryl and it itches, no harm done.

The next day the bees had chilled out and we were ready to get started.
